SE Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (Ignalina NPP) rapidly moves to one of the most important phases of decommissioning – beginning of the dismantling of two the most powerful RBMK reactors.
Successful spent nuclear fuel unloading process has been started earlier than it was anticipated in the final decommissioning plan of 2014 and now Ignalina NPP continues to maintain a rapid pace of work execution. At present, 90 containers with spent nuclear fuel are already in the Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility (ISFSF), and in total in 2019 there would be 40 containers transported to the Facility to ensure that the unloading of spent nuclear fuel will be completed by 2022.
‘Spent nuclear fuel unloading is running smoothly, and while there are still many serious and important tasks ahead, we are already seeing and excited about our achievements due to the critical importance of performed works. Current works underlay future activities of Ignalina NPP in the sphere of safe decommissioning and successful completion hereof’ said Director general of the enterprise Audrius Kamienas.
It is planned to place 190 containers with spent nuclear fuel to the storage facility by the end of 2022. The start of the first unit reactor dismantling works is scheduled for 2027.
When complying with the applicable safety requirements Ignalina NPP makes every effort to achieve the desired result in the area of decommissioning.
