In 2023 May 16 The representatives of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (hereinafter - INPP) INPP Andrius Vyšniauskas, Maksim Koliada, Denis Simonov, Jekaterina Abrosimova and Erika Gerybaitė together with their partners participated in the conference organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna "International Conference on Decommissioning of Nuclear Facilities: Addressing the past and Ensuring the future”. During this conference, in a special open discussion event, Andrius Vyšniauskas, the project manager, presented the project “Safety Enhancement of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant Radioactive Waste management”. Apart from INPP representatives, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (DSA), the State Atomic Energy Inspectorate (VATESI) and the Norwegian Nuclear Decommissioning Agency (NND) representatives also took part in the discussion session while answering the questions.
The open discussion/presentation was organized as an additional part of the conference in order to bring special attention to the project “Safety Enhancement of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant Radioactive Waste management” implemented by the INPP. Andrius Vyšniauskas, the project manager, introduced participants of the conference with the results, challenges and lessons learned throughout this project as well as experience gained in cooperation with the representatives of DSA, VATESI and IAEA which added to the project success.
"The project which is implemented together with partners and donor countries provides INPP unique opportunities to create conceptual solutions for the final disposal/storage of spent nuclear fuel, long-lived radioactive waste and industrial waste. Despite all the challenges that arose during the course of the project, the competence, high motivation and exceptionally positive cooperation of the employees of IAE, DSA and VATESI allowed us to achieve the goals set for today" - says Project Manager Andrius Vyšniauskas.
The discussion/presentation held in terms to represent and discuss the "Increasing the safety of radioactive waste management at the Ignalina nuclear power plant" project is only part of the international conference, which has continued throughout all this week. The purpose of the conference is to discuss achievements, lessons learned, and share good practices, emphasizing strategies and methods that promote the safe, reliable, and cost-effective implementation of nuclear facility decommissioning projects. More than 470 participants from 71 countries and 5 organizations took part in the conference.
We remind you that the project “Safety Enhancement of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant Radioactive Waste management” is partly funded from 2014-2021. Funded by the Norwegian Financial Mechanism and co-financed by Lithuania. The aim of the project is to improve the management, control and prevention system of decommissioning of nuclear energy at the Ignalina nuclear power plant.
