On 16 July member of the European Parliament appointed by the EP as the main speaker on the issues related to the European Union financial support for the decommissioning of Ignalina NPP in the forthcoming financial perspectives Rebecca Harms visited the State Enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP). The main purpose of the visit was to evaluate the progress achieved in the INPP decommissioning and to ascertain the sufficiency of funding proposed by the EU for safety completion of anticipated works.
Along with Ms. R. Harms the INPP was attended by the EP member Bronis Rope, Minister of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania Zygimantas Vaiciunas, representatives of the European Commission and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Delegation visited the protected area of the INPP and were introduced to the ongoing dismantling activities, attended the Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility, Radioactive Waste Retrieval Facility, as well as had an opportunity to discuss the key decommissioning projects, upcoming challenges and funding issues.
Later the meeting with representatives or regional mass media and general public where Ms. R. Harms spoke about the need for funding of the INPP decommissioning activities in order to ensure the required safety of the region and the EU, was held.
