The state enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (hereinafter - INPP) has started the first campaign of placing radioactive waste in the Very Low-Level Radioactive Waste Landfill Facility (B19). The placing of packages into the landfill facility will last until the end of August, the installation of engineering barriers is planned to be completed in October-November.
Half-height ISO containers, compacted waste bundles and bulk bags will be placed on the base plate of the landfill. This way, a dike-shaped above-ground structure will be formed, the covering layers (engineering barriers) of which will consist of artificial and natural insulating materials. The purpose of these barriers is to protect the waste from water. 154 containers and more than 1,000 soft packages are planned to be placed in the landfill during the first campaign. The first campaign of the project B19-2 is carried out by the personnel of the INPP.
Waste management and transportation to the landfill facility is carried out in accordance with modern environmental protection requirements and IAEA radioactive waste management principles.
The radioactive waste will be deposited in the very low-level radioactive waste landfill facility with no intention of retrieval in the future. The INPP will place the waste in the landfill until it is filled, then it will be closed. Active institutional monitoring of the landfill will take place for 30 years after the closure of the landfill, and passive monitoring of the landfill is planned for another 70 years. These terms are defined in the Safety Analysis Basis for this landfill facility. After this period, the territory of the landfill can be used without any restrictions.
The project is funded by the EU Ignalina programme.
