The first phase of the Unit 2 dismantling project begins

According to INPP Final Decommissioning Plan (hereinafter – FDP) INPP’s decommissioning process is divided into several decommissioning projects. Each project is a separate specific process, covering a defined area of action, which determines the scope of the work, the intended organization of the work, the safety analysis and the implementation of the early environmental measure, i.e. environmental impact assessment (hereinafter - EIA). The main objective of the EIA is to ensure that the commence of economic activities will not have a negative impact on the environment and human health.

According to FDP, INPP is currently implementing several separate projects for dismantling and decontamination of decommissioned equipment. One such project is “Dismantling and Decontamination of INPP Unit 2 Reactor R1 and R2 Work Zone Equipment” (see chart), the EIA procedure of which is identified as the initial stage of project implementation. Dismantling works in the work zones R1 and R2 of the Unit 2 are planned to be completed by May 2028.

The aim of the project is to dismantle and decontaminate the decommissioned equipment of the work zones R1 and R2 of the Unit 2 in order to carry out the initial handling and final disposal of the generated waste in accordance with the requirements of the applicable regulatory documents.

The EIA report analyzes the alternatives of the planned economic activity and selects technological solutions for the implementation of this activity that prevent or reduce the negative impact of the planned economic activity on personnel, resident population, and the environment. Please note that the planned economic activity will generate about 2121.8 tons of waste. According to the classification of radioactive waste established in the Nuclear Safety Requirements No. BSR-3.1.2-2017, waste of classes А, В, С, D, E will be generated: the report provides for the quantities of individual waste classes, their transportation and storage options, and identifies non-radiological and radiological impacts on the environment.

The EIA report sets out the main aspects affecting the safety of personnel in order to demonstrate that the during the works, proper conditions will be ensured, and under these conditions the radiation doses of personnel will not exceed the established limits of radiation safety standards. A detailed assessment of personnel’s exposure by calculating doses for individual workplaces and operations using the ALARA principle will be carried out in the technical project and Safety Analysis Report.

The main works of the planned economic activity are classified as radiologically dangerous, therefore, when organizing and carrying out the works of the said project, the requirements of INPP radiation safety normative technical documents will be taken into account. It should be noted that the proposed economic activity will not have any other significant radiological impact on environmental components or public health.
