On 20-24 September the personnel of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) subdivisions - Radioactive Waste Disposal Division (RWDD) and Decommissioning Projects Program Managers (DPPM) and 2 representatives of VATESI participated in the international training “Material and Waste Management in Decommissioning” in France.
Representatives of INPP assessed the quality, relevance of the organized training and the competence of the lecturers as excellent and got acquainted with both experience and good practice of European countries (France, Sweden, Spain) in the management of radioactive waste after the decommissioning of nuclear power plants.
According to the participants, it is appropriate to organize such training in the future as well, as the topic of radioactive waste management is very broad and could be continued by presenting the experience, good and bad practices of decommissioning and radioactive waste management in the United Kingdom, Germany, or other countries.
On 29 September 9 employees of PLS, TRS, KRATS and RAAS subdivisions participated in the training “Radioactive Waste Transportation / Logistics”. INPP employees positively assessed the training, the work of lecturers and stated that they received a lot of useful information about the requirements for the transportation of dangerous goods in Lithuania, which they will apply in their daily work. Participants suggested to organize similar training in the future to gain more examples of good practice in the transportation of radioactive waste on public roads.
The aim of the project “Safety Enhancement of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant Radioactive Waste Management” implemented in 2020–2024 is to improve the nuclear decommissioning management, control, and prevention system at INPP to reduce the negative impact on the environment, ecosystem, and population.
One of the most important expected results of the project is the increased professional competence of INPP, VATESI and DSA employees (through trainings and visits to competence development centers of foreign countries).
The activities are funded by the 2014-2021 Norwegian Financial Mechanism under the project "Safety Enhancement of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant Radioactive Waste Management".
