Public tender for preparatory works for the demolition of Maišiagala radioactive waste storage...

On January 17, 2022, the State enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (hereinafter - INPP) announced the public tender for the demolition of the Maišiagala Radioactive Waste Storage Facility (MRWSF). The scope of this procurement will include the construction and installation of temporary structures necessary for the removal of radioactive waste from the MRWSF.

This procurement is an important stage of the MRWSF decommissioning project, during which the necessary infrastructure - temporary buildings and structures, engineering networks and communications, will be built and installed. Within the scope of the prepared demolition design, a temporary building made of aluminum profiles and multilayer panels (“caisson”) is planned - a building of a nuclear power facility, in which the Contractor will have to install ventilation, radiation control, lighting, fire alarm and other systems. It is expected that after the signing of the agreement in 2nd Qtr 2022, the Contractor is expected to build the infrastructure by 2nd Qtr. 2023.

The contractor will have to develop the construction project, supply the equipment needed for the removal of radioactive waste and radiation control equipment, as well as participate in the "cold" and "hot" trials. During the cold trials the operation of systems and equipment without the use of radioactive materials will be tested, while hot trials will include testing of equipment and systems using radioactive materials. After the trials, reports will have to be prepared for the State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI).

Demolition works and radioactive waste removal at MRWSF will be carried out by INPP. INPP was granted with necessary construction permits in March 2021. VATESI issued the license to perform the decommissioning of MRWSF on 13 May 2021.

MRWSF accumulated radioactive waste generated due to the use of radioactive materials and radioactive sources in industry, medicine and research. In 1989, it was decided to close the storage facility because it did not meet modern environmental requirements. On 15 December 2016 the agreement was signed with the Environmental Projects Management Agency (APVA) on the implementation of MRWSF decommissioning project. The waste is expected to be removed by the end of 2023.

The procurement is re-announced considering that in February 2021 the announced procurement procedures were completed without selecting the winner, after assessing the qualifications of potential suppliers.

“We hope that we will be able to select a reliable, highly qualified and experienced contractor who will successfully perform the construction and installation of temporary structures required for the removal of waste from MRWSF. We strongly invite all eligible suppliers to participate in the tender”, said Dr. Gintautas Klevinskas, MRWSF decommissioning project manager.

"Given the importance of the project, its implementation is given high priority. Therefore, it is very important to us that reliable suppliers participate in the tender, who will perform the planned works safely and on time, ”underlined Audrius Kamienas, INPP General Director.

The project is funded by the European Union Structural Funds Cohesion Fund.
